LLA is ESG sector leader for third year

For the third consecutive year, London Luton Airport (LLA) has achieved the top spot in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) assessment, achieving sector leader status with a maximum score of 100 and receiving a 5-star rating for its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and management.

GRESB is an independent, international sustainability framework that globally benchmarks major organisations and assets on their ESG management, with sector leaders being identified as the top-performing organisations by sector, region, and nature of ownership.

Alberto Martin, Chief Executive at LLA, commented: “London Luton Airport is committed to demonstrating the highest level of ESG governance and performance and we are therefore delighted to maintain a 100% score, five-star rating and sector leader status for the third consecutive year. Our plans for responsible growth include ambitious goals to enable our teams to deliver a truly sustainable airport for our passengers and our local communities. This endorsement from GRESB further highlights our ongoing commitment to delivering Net Zero as well as broader socio-economic benefits to the region.”

In July, LLA published its latest Responsible Business Strategy (RBS), detailing the targets and commitments that will shape the next three years of its sustainability activity. Key initiatives include the continued decarbonisation of its operational fleet and ground handling operations, and the recently launched community education programme.

Amparo Brea Álvarez, Innovation, Sustainability and Client Experience Director at Aena, added: “This recognition from GRESB provides further demonstration of London Luton Airport’s continuing commitment to all aspects of its ESG principles and sustainability strategy. Everybody associated with LLA should feel extremely proud of this achievement, and the contribution they have made to ensuring the airport has maintained its sector leader status. As we do with all our airports across the world, we work closely with LLA to identify opportunities to embed sustainability and continue to innovate across all aspects of its operation. This considerable achievement underlines our shared commitment for LLA to play a leading role in delivering sustainable aviation for the airport’s partners, passengers and communities.”

Graeme Ferguson, Head of Airports at InfraBridge, added: “We work closely with LLA to drive and deliver strong, forward thinking ESG management and performance. For three years running, LLA has demonstrated this through the detailed GRESB assessment, being named as a sector leader, with a maximum score and a five-star rating. Good governance and management of ESG issues enables us to support LLA in continuing to operate as a responsible business, which is important as we look to the future of responsible green growth of one of London’s top performing airports.”

Sebastien Roussotte, CEO, GRESB, commented: “GRESB Sector Leaders help set the pace for the industry, leading the way towards a more sustainable future. We are both proud of and encouraged by this year’s Sector Leaders for their dedication, leadership, and commitment to ESG principles and sustainability.

“Our Sector Leaders this year have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to sustainability, leading by example and driving the industry forward. Their dedication to ESG excellence is truly commendable.

“What does it mean to be a GRESB Sector Leader? It’s an acknowledgment of leadership and a demonstration of the deep dedication and excellence that is driving the industry forward."

About London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport (LLA) is one of the UK’s busiest airports, carrying over 16.2 million passengers in 2023. The airport is operated by a consortium, of which the majority shareholder is AENA, the world’s largest airport operator, and InfraBridge, a leading infrastructure investment manager. Airlines include easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui, FlyOne, Sun Express and El Al.

The Luton Airport Express is a new dedicated train service that allows passengers to travel from central London to the LLA terminal in around 30 minutes. The Luton Airport Express runs from St Pancras International to Luton Airport Parkway station and connects seamlessly with the DART, an electrically powered people mover that connects to the airport terminal in less than four minutes.

In 2024, LLA was named European Airport of the Year (10-25 million passengers) by ACI EUROPE.

Last year, LLA also became only the third major UK airport to achieve Level 4 of the globally recognised Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme, demonstrating that it is ‘transforming its operations to achieve carbon reductions in line with global climate goals’. With a maximum score of 100 and a five-star rating, LLA has been ranked as a sector leader for three consecutive years in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) benchmark of sustainability governance management and performance of major infrastructure assets worldwide.
