Easter bounce for London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport (LLA) welcomed almost 1.2 million passengers in April, marking its busiest month since the pandemic began and demonstrating the airport’s continued recovery.

In comparison, LLA welcomed just 106,000 passengers in April 2021.

Short stay city breaks were in high demand over the Easter half-term with Amsterdam topping the list of most popular destinations, followed by Bucharest, Budapest, Warsaw, and Tirana.

April’s encouraging figures set the scene for what is shaping up to be a busy summer for LLA, with the rise in passenger numbers expected to continue. This summer, holidaymakers have a choice of 130 different destinations, with the Greek island of Kefalonia becoming the latest addition to the departure boards with easyJet’s first flights to Kefalonia taking off from 30 June.

Passengers will also be able to enjoy a number of new shops and restaurants that are due to open this summer including craft beer specialist The Big Smoke Taphouse & Kitchen, fresh and healthy Mexican street food experts, El Mexicana, a new airside Burger King restaurant and WHSmith Books. Coffee aficionados will also benefit from the recent arrival of two stylish ‘self-serve’ Illy coffee outlets.

In preparation for its busiest summer since 2019, the airport is actively recruiting people for dozens of roles across security, retail, customer service and hospitality, as well as roles related to the Direct Air-Rail Transit (DART) system, which will link the airport terminal with Luton Airport Parkway railway station.

Alberto Martin, CEO of LLA, said: “The London Luton Airport team has worked incredibly hard to deliver an excellent, stress-free airport experience over the Easter holidays, helping so many people reconnect with family and friends, enjoy a well-deserved holiday or forge new business connections.

The launch of new destinations and the opening of new shops and restaurants, along with a great customer experience are a clear signal that LLA is truly back in business and positions us as the airport of choice for people travelling this summer.”

About London Luton Airport:

London Luton Airport (LLA) is one of the UK’s busiest airports despite Covid-19, carrying 58 million passengers in the past five years.

The airport is operated by a consortium of which the majority shareholder is AENA, the world’s largest airport operator, and AMP Capital, a specialist global investment manager. Airlines include easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui, Blue Air, FlyOne, Sun Express and El Al.

LLA was the first UK airport to receive the Airport Health Accreditation from Airports Council International (ACI) for health and hygiene measures introduced during the pandemic.

Passengers travelling by rail can reach the airport via a half-hourly express rail service which operates between London and Luton Airport Parkway. In addition, work is nearly complete on a £225 million light rail system linking the airport with Luton Airport Parkway station. The project is being delivered by the airport owners, Luton Rising – a company owned by Luton Council.

LLA is awaiting final approval to raise its annual passenger cap by 1 million, to 19 million. It will not require any physical changes or new construction at the airport and will prepare the airport to support the recovery of the local and national economy as demand for travel returns.
