LLA nominated for National Transport Awards

London Luton Airport (LLA) and its transport partners have been recognised with four 2024 National Transport Award nominations.

The nominations follow a successful 12 months in which LLA was crowned Best European Airport of the Year (10-25 million passengers) by Airports Council International Europe, the trade association for 600 European airports. In 2023, LLA was named as the UK’s best airport by readers of the prestigious Condé Nast Traveller magazine.

This year’s shortlist sees LLA named as a finalist in the ‘Airport of the Year’ category, in recognition of its strong operational performance and continued investment in passenger facilities over the past 12 months.

Following the transformational impact of the Luton Airport Express, LLA is also shortlisted alongside East Midlands Railway (EMR) and the airport owner, Luton Rising, in the Best Alliance and Collaboration category. Linking seamlessly with the Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit), the all-electric Luton Airport Express takes passengers from central London to the LLA terminal in around 30 minutes.

Underlining the strength of LLA’s sustainable transport connections, LLA’s bus partnerships have also been recognised with two further nominations. Arriva’s Greenline 757 coach service from LLA to London Victoria, and the Stagecoach East MK1 routes from LLA to Bedford/Milton Keynes, are both nominated for the Best Bus Service award.

Alberto Martin, Chief Executive Officer at London Luton Airport, commented: “We are delighted to have been nominated for the ‘Airport of the Year’ award which is testament to the professionalism and commitment of our teams across the airport who work so hard to deliver operational excellence and a simple and friendly passenger experience. Enhancing connectivity is another key priority for London Luton Airport and it’s great to see our collaborations with rail and bus partners recognised as we look to promote our strong surrounding transport network and reduce the environmental impact of journeys to and from the airport."

The National Transport Awards celebrate commitment, expertise, and innovation of individuals and teams working across the United Kingdom’s transport networks.

Winners will be announced on 3rd October at the Westminster Park Plaza in London.

About London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport (LLA) is one of the UK’s busiest airports, carrying over 16.2 million passengers in 2023. The airport is operated by a consortium, of which the majority shareholder is AENA, the world’s largest airport operator, and InfraBridge, a leading infrastructure investment manager. Airlines include easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui, FlyOne, Sun Express and El Al.

The Luton Airport Express is a new dedicated train service that allows passengers to travel from central London to the LLA terminal in around 30 minutes. The Luton Airport Express runs from St Pancras International to Luton Airport Parkway station and connects seamlessly with the DART, an electrically powered people mover that connects to the airport terminal in less than four minutes.

In 2024, LLA was named European Airport of the Year (10-25 million passengers) by ACI EUROPE. This followed being named as the UK’s best airport by readers of the prestigious Condé Nast Traveller magazine in 2023.

Last year, LLA also became only the third major UK airport to achieve Level 4 of the globally recognised Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme, demonstrating that it is ‘transforming its operations to achieve carbon reductions in line with global climate goals’. With a maximum score of 100 and a five-star rating, LLA has been ranked as a sector leader for two consecutive years in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) benchmark of sustainability governance management and performance of major infrastructure assets worldwide.
